The Alliance for Excellent Education and New Leaders for New Schools' Report Briefing and Panel Discussion: The Role of Principals in Driving Student Achievement Gains

A special briefing and panel discussion of a recent New Leaders for New Schools report, Key Insights of the Urban Excellence Framework: Defining an Urban Principalship to Drive Dramatic Gains, was held in Washington D.C.  The report explores high-poverty, urban public schools making remarkable advancements in student achievement and highlights the promising practices for urban school principals.  The event was held in collaboration with the Alliance for Excellent Education, a national policy and advocacy organization dedicated to ensuring that all students graduate from high school prepared for work, college, and life. 

Jon Schnur, New Leaders for New Schools CEO and Co-Founder, and the Alliance's Vice President of Federal Advocacy and Policy Development, Bethany Little, were joined by a panel of principals to discuss how the best practices they have applied in their schools can be implemented in all schools, particulary those most in need of intervention and reform.

New Leaders for New Schools received the 2008 NewSchools Venture Fund "Organization of the Year" Award, announced during the annual NewSchools Summit in Washington DC. The summit brings together education leaders committed to the transformation of public education for students in underserved communities.  This award recognizes New Leaders for New School's outstanding work and dedication to academic excellence in urban public schools and applauds the exceptional efforts of each member of the New Leaders team.

Jon Schnur, CEO and Co-Founder of New Leaders for New Schools, joins the Center for American Progress and distinguished guests as moderator for a special briefing and panel discussion of a recently released New Leaders report on urban public schools making dramatic gains in student achievement and the impact on responsibilities and role definition of urban school principals. The report also presents preliminary lessons learned from high achieving schools and suggestions for redefining the urban principalship.

The Cahn Fellows Program for Distinguished New York City Principals at Teachers College, Columbia University recognizes and supports outstanding New York City principals who lead elementary, middle, and high schools across New York City.  The selection committee is made up of leaders from New Leaders for New Schools, the Leadership Academy, and Teachers College and Replications, Inc. This year's fellows exemplify strong school leadership and share an unwavering commitment to educational excellence.
