New Leaders for New Schools
District Partnership
New Leaders for New Schools has an unwavering commitment to ensuring every child achieves academic excellence and reaches his or her full potential. We have created a program that serves as a new pathway for passionate and resourceful educators to become principals in high-need communities across the country. We currently partner with the following cities and regions: Baltimore/Prince George's County, Chicago, Milwaukee, Memphis, New Orleans, New York, the Bay Area, and Washington, D.C.
2008-2009 Site Competition
We aim to identify our next new city, district, or regional partner through our 2008-2009 Site Competition. We seek a partner who shares our vision and relentless drive to achieve the goal of 90-100% of students proficient in core academic subjects and on track to graduate from high school ready for college, careers, and citizenship. Aspects of this partnership include but are not limited to:
- Recruiting, selecting, and training the next generation of outstanding urban principals who can effectively lead a critical mass of schools within a school system
- Equipping these leaders and their schools with the support and tools they need to succeed so schools led by New Leaders principals for at least 5 years have 90-100% of students achieve proficiency in core academic subjects.
In Fall 2008, we will begin accepting initial proposals from results-oriented school system leaders who seek a long-term partnership with New Leaders for New Schools as part of their overall vision for student achievement focused district reform. Our national goals are:
By 2014,
- School Performance at Scale: By 2014, 80% (over 300) of schools led by New Leaders principals for at least 5 years will have 90-100% of students achieve proficiency in core academic subjects and be on track to graduate from high school ready for college, careers, and citizenship.
- Mission-driven, High-Quality Principals at Scale: By 2014, over 50% of schools in most of our current partner cities- and over 50% of principal vacancies- will be filled by high-quality New Leaders principals with the knowledge, skills, beliefs, and frameworks needed to ensure 90-100% student success rates in their schools. Through this growth plan, New Leaders will train 25% of the new principals in the U.S. needed for urban, low-income schools.
- World-class, Scalable, Sustainable Organization and Innovative "Action Tank": By 2014, New Leaders will be a world-class, scalable, sustainable, data-driven organization that has created an essential knowledge base that is actively used by education policy and decision-makers to drive educational excellence at scale. This innovative "action tank" will blend the power of a think tank with the results of and lessons learned from highly successful schools and principals at increasing scale.
Our national goals are adapted for each program city. For example, our next partnership will launch in fall 2008, with the first cohort of New Leaders beginning their Residency training year in summer 2009. Looking forward, this means that the majority of New Leaders in the first three cohorts will have led schools for five years or more by 2017. Therefore, city-level metrics might include:
By 2017,
- 80% of New Leaders from the first three cohorts will have led schools for five years or more.
- Over 50% of schools across the school system are led by principals who are driving dramatic increases in student achievement in their schools.
