Become a New Leader

City Requirements

While all applicants must meet our rigorous Selection Criteria, there are minimum application requirements that vary by program city. All applicants must possess instructional expertise in a K-12 classroom setting. Our New Leaders have between 2 to 25 years of classroom experience. New Leaders for New Schools’ applicants should have a minimum of 2 to 3 years of successful full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom, preferably a teaching certificate, and experience working with and leading adults. In some of our program locations, candidates who are not certified as teachers may still be eligible for entry to the New Leaders program and principal certification.

City/Site REQUIREMENTS FOR ADMISSION INTO THE NEW LEADERS FOR NEW SCHOOLS PROGRAM
Please note that charter school leaders have fewer requirements. Contact our local program sites with city-specific questions.
REQUIREMENTS TO BECOME A CERTIFIED PRINCIPAL
(many of which Residents will complete during their Residency)
Please note that administrative credentials are not usually required to lead charter schools. For more information, please contact the local program sites.
Baltimore - A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A master's degree or equivalent**
- A teaching certificate (preferred, but not required)

**Candidates with 36 graduate credits hours (at least 24 graduate credits/ up to 12 post baccalaureate credits) by June 2009 are eligible to apply
- Evidence of a qualifying score on the ISLLIC exam (it is offered multiple times during the Residency year)
- Verified offer of employment in administrative position in a school
Bay Area - A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A California Teaching Credential or an out of state teaching credential

Note: Out of state credentials can be transferred to California with no additional work. California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST) (preferred, but not required) NOTE: Potential candidates for the New Leaders program in the Bay Area who do not meet the above requirements may still apply if they possess a bachelor's degree and have three years of K-12 teaching experience. However, if accepted, these candidates will not become certified and will only be eligible to become principals in charter schools (where certification is not required).
- California Basic Educational Skills Test (CBEST)
- Completion of an administration program or administrator's exam
- Verified offer of employment in administrative position in a school
Chicago - A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom at an accredited school.
- A bachelor's degree
- Valid certification required or school service personnel certification, the exception being if you have two years of full time teaching experience in an accredited Charter school that did not require a teaching certificate.
- A master's degree (which can be obtained during the residency year, from National-Louis University, our local university partner)
- Completion of graduate level coursework in management, supervision and instructional leadership through a recognized institution (earned through our program and NLU)
- A minimum of 2 years of full-time teaching experience or school service personnel experience
- Successful completion of the required certification examinations; the General Administrative endorsement (Type 75) test and the Illinois Basic Skills test. (Any accepted applicant who has not passed the IL Basic Skills test must do so upon acceptance to the program. The General Administrative test is taken in December during the Residency year.)
Memphis - A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A master's degree in any academic subject completed by May 2008
- Current or expired teaching certificates
- Successful completion of the New Leaders residency which ensures certification from the State of Tennessee
- A passing score on the Praxis Beginning Administrator's Exam for the state of Tennessee (taken during the New Leaders program)
- A master's degree in any academic subject
Milwaukee - A minimum of three years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- Valid teaching certification required
- Master's degree in any field (earned by June 2009)
Note: Participants will not earn a masters degree through participation in the Milwaukee program; this degree must be earned through a separate Master's degree program.
- For New Leaders serving in Milwaukee Public Schools, you must establish residency in the city of Milwaukee by June 2010
- Successful completion of the New Leaders residency
- For New Leaders serving in Milwaukee public charter schools, a master's degree is required by the end of the Residency year (Note: participants will not earn a master's degree through participation in the Milwaukee program; this degree must be earned through a separate Master's degree program)
New Orleans - A baccalaureate degree from an accredited university
- A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom

NOTE: Potential candidates for the New Leaders program in New Orleans who do not hold or are not eligible to hold a valid teaching certificate may still apply if they possess a bachelor's degree and have three years of K-12 teaching experience. However, if accepted, these candidates will not become certified and will only be eligible to become principals in charter schools (where certification is not required).
- Hold or be eligible to hold a valid Louisiana Type B or Level 2 teaching certificate or have a comparable level out-of-state teaching certificate
- Successful completion of the New Leaders residency
- A passing score on the School Leaders Licensure Assessment

New York City - A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A master's degree (preferred, but not required)
- A teaching certificate (required but does not need to be NY specific)
- Completion of a NYS registered School Building Leader program (earned through successful completion of the New Leaders program)
- Field work in administration (earned through successful completion of the New Leaders program)
- A master’s degree (can be earned through successful completion of the New Leaders program and three additional graduate school classes)
- A passing score on the School Building Leader Exam
Prince George's County - A minimum of 3 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A master's degree or equivalent
- A teaching certificate (preferred, but not required)
- Evidence of a qualifying score on the ISLLIC exam (it is offered multiple times during the residency year)
- Verified offer of employment in administrative position in a school
Washington, D.C. - A minimum of 2 years of full-time experience teaching in a K-12 classroom
- A bachelor's degree
- A teaching certificate (preferred, but not required)
- A master's degree in Educational Administration, Supervision or Leadership from an accredited university/college (which can be obtained during the Residency year from Trinity College, our local university partner, by successful completion of the New Leaders Foundations coursework and Residency)

--OR--
A master's degree and completion of a state approved or NCATE approved program in Educational Administration, Supervision or Leadership from an accredited university/college

--AND--
At least three (3) years of previous teaching experience (New Leaders Residency may be counted as the third year, in addition to the entry requirement of two years of school-based experience)

--AND--
Completion of the School Leaders Licensure Assessment (to be completed during the Residency year)
